He also picks out some of his favourite classic jazz tracks and lesser-known gems. Artists featured include Charles Mingus, Me’Shell NdegéOcello and this track from Gang Colours. On this weeks Jamie Cullum show on BBC Radio 2 he features one of his favourite British jazz bands, London-based modern jazz outfit Empirical. They perform some music from their latest record Elements of Truth, released in 2011 on Naim Jazz.

The young quartet introduce the tracks, explaining how they take influences from outside jazz, and tell us why they love playing jazz live. You can listen again to the show on BBC iPlayer until Tuesday 21st February.

In this clip from the show Paul McCartney talks to Jamie about his musical tastes when rock ‘n’ roll hit in the 50s. He explains that at the time, his love was for the older jazz classics such as Cole Porter and Harold Arlen, and when he met John Lennon, they both realised they shared a mutual love for this music.

Here is a preview of a special in-depth interview with Sir Paul McCartney, which will be on Jamie Cullum’s show next week. It will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Tuesday 7th February at 7pm.

The two musicians discuss the role jazz has played in Sir Paul’s life, from growing up listening to his father’s jazz band to their mutual love of Fats Waller. Sir Paul reflects on his days with The Beatles, and how jazz subtly informed the way The Beatles approached their composition. He then talks in-depth with Jamie about his current album of jazz standards and original compositions, ‘Kisses On The Bottom’, and explains the way it came together, from the initial inspiration to the great collaborations.

This week on Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show, the American jazz singer and songwriter Gretchen Parlato is in session at the BBC Maida Vale studios. She performs songs from her latest album, ‘The Lost And Found’, which was released on Obliqsound last year.

Gretchen talks about making the album, which was produced and partly arranged by Robert Glasper, and about her musical upbringing within an artistic family.

Last night on Jamie Cullum’s show on BBC Radio 2 he had the official first play of ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter’, the opening track from Paul McCartney’s  new album Kisses On The Bottom’.

Listen again to the show on BBC iPlayer till 31st January. Also on the show Jamie chats to the Grammy nominated Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Gregory Porter about his recent rise to success after years of playing in small jazz clubs in New York, and his new album Be Good.

The two musicians discuss their different approaches to composition and Gregory Porter shares stories about the people who have helped him get to where he is today. Below are some behind the scenes photos.

Jamie Cullum @ BBC Introducing Masterclass 2012

Below is a video of Jamie Cullum in conversation with Jo Wiley at the second year of BBC Introducing’s Masterclass, which supports unsigned and un-discovered artists by giving them access to, and insights from high profile musicians and industry professionals.

The event was held at the legendary Abbey Road Studio and BBC Maida Vale Studios, London and other artists there included: Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, Wretch 32, Maverick Sabre, Friendly Fires, Magnetic Man and Frank Turner. More pictures and videos here.

British jazz composer and pianist Zoe Rahman recorded a session at the BBC Maida Vale studios for Jamie Cullum’s show for BBC Radio 2. The session features tracks from her forthcoming album ‘Kindred Spirits’.

As well as her personal music projects, Zoe Rahman works with the likes of Courtney Pine and Clark Tracey’s New Quintet plus other projects within the UK jazz scene and abroad.

Also on the show Jamie plays his usual great mix of music rooted in jazz and has a chat with Jo Wiley about BBC Introducing.

This week’s Jamie Cullum show on BBC Radio 2 features a fantastic session from Robert Glasper recorded at the BBC Maida Vale Studios. The American jazz pianist and producer performs a track from his album ‘In My Element’ and his version of Nirvana’s ‘Teen Spirit’!

Many of you may have heard Glasper’s work with the likes of Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard and Roy Hargrove as well as many hip hop artists including Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye West and Jay-Z.
