Monday night was an exciting night for Folded Wing and the rest of the radio industry, it was of course the 2013 Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Folded Wing were delighted to be nominated in the “Music Radio Broadcaster Of The Year” category for Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2.

Jamie and the Folded Wing team all headed down to the Grosvenor House Hotel for the awards, suitably dressed up for the night! Jamie also played at the event and caused a bit of a stir on the red carpet when he decided to turn the tables on the press!

The first half saw a performance from Robbie Williams and the first awards. Radio 1′s Dan and Phil walked away winners of this years first ever “Sony Golden Headphones Awards”. Danny Baker took an award for “Best Entertainment Programme” for his weekend show on 5 Live,  only a few months after leaving his BBC London slot! John Humphrys collected an award for Radio Journalism Of The Year for his interview with former BBC Director General, George Entwistle, John made a lovely tribute to the former DG in his acceptance speech.

The Folded Wing team were particularly happy to see The Listening Project take away a bronze award for “Best Speech Programme”, a project that we all particularly admire and love.

It was also fantastic to see Steve Lamacq walk away with his FIRST EVER Sony award. He was presented with a special award for his 20 years of service to radio, an award that is thoroughly deserved!

Following a performance from The Saturdays it was soon time for the second half of the awards featuring the category we were particularly interested in “Music Radio Broadcaster Of The Year”. Unfortunately Jamie didn’t win an award, but the whole team were delighted to see Cerys Matthews take the Gold. Cerys is an outstanding broadcaster and produces a show that we all love and listen to a lot!

Although a cliché we were incredibly happy just to be nominated in the 3rd year of doing the show with Jamie and we received some brilliant feedback from the judges…..

Jamie has become an accomplished broadcaster as well as a much loved musician. He wears his knowledge and respect lightly to deliver a show of fantastic music with energy and enthusiasm.

The second half of the awards saw Christian O’Connell win his 10th award in 10 years and Eddie Mair win “Speech Radio Broadcaster Of The Year”. Radio 4′s The Today Programme picked up “Breakfast Show Of The Year” and after a superb year with the Olympics and Paralympics, BBC Radio 5 Live won “UK Station Of The Year” .

There was also a lovely moment when Metro Radio won “Station Of The Year (1m+)”  as Programme director Chris Pegg spoke of his delight at finally winning an award after years of turning up and leaving empty handed.

It was also fantastic to see so many UK indies represented in the awards and many of them taking awards away too! And to see National Prison Radio in a couple of categorys was a great reward for the work that they do!

All in all it was a lovely night and we had a few drinks afterwards in celebration of our nomination and a wonderful evening, topped off when Jamie Cullum performed to close this years ceremony!

Listen again to the Why Make Music? documentary on BBC iPlayer

17 Jan

Last night our documentary ‘Why Make Music?’ presenter by Daniel P Carter aired on BBC Radio 1 as part of Radio 1′s Stories. You can listen again on BBC iPlayer till 23rd January.

Musicians are often asked how they make music – but rarely asked why? In this one hour documentary, musician and Radio 1 Rock Show presenter Daniel P Carter tries to find out the answer, or indeed, as it turn out, the answers.

He starts off with hardcore band Gallows, rehearsing down at Maida Vale, before heading out of the mosh pit to meet a wide variety of musicians – from up and coming grime MC Dot Rotten to The Drums – to find out why they do what they do.

Daniel asks whether or not people make music because they’re in the right place at the right time, like being in Seattle when grunge kicked off, or being young in London at the start of punk. We hear from Wade McNeil (Gallows) on how hardcore band Razor Eater inspired him; and Roll Deep’s DJ Target talks about growing up with the roots of grime in Bow, East London.

He quizzes Toddla T, J Davey, The Drums, meets journalist Miranda Sawyer and listens as head music therapist from The Barchester Nordoff Robbins Initiative, Stuart Woods, explains why music transforms lives.

Next we meet a range of artists from Emmy The Great to Wild Beasts to find out why they make music, before heading down to south London music project Felix’s School of Rock to meet young teenagers who are just starting out.

Scientist Dr Harry Witchel drops by to explain why humans have such a powerful relationship with music and Dot Rotten explains how making music had a powerful impact on his life.

Daniel then turns his attention to two musicians with a purpose: gospel rapper Guvna B who makes music because of his faith; and Riz MC who explains that socially conscious music is having a renaissance. And finally, there’s a look into the future to find out how technology is changing the way people start making music.

In the clip below Gospel rapper Guvna B and singer songwriter Emmy The Great explain why they make make music.

Happy New Year from Folded Wing!

4 Jan

Happy new year from Folded Wing! Hope you all enjoyed the festive season and haven’t given up on your resolutions yet!

As a final hoorah to 2011 the Folded Wing team have chosen their favourite albums of the last 12 months!

Eliza’s choice: Nicolas Jaar – ‘Space Is Only Noise’ (Circus Company)

“Nicolas Jaar’s debut album breathed a whole new life into the electronic music scene, slowing the tempo and bringing in influences from Ethiopian jazz to avant-garde pop. A multi-instrumentalist analogue dancefloor hero!”

Rachel’s choice: Metronomy – ‘The English Riviera’ (Because Music)

“I’ve been a fan since the beginning and love that they took their music in another direction with this album. Sounds really great listening to the album as a whole entity and great for road trips too!”

John’s choice: Ghostpoet – ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’ (Brownswood Recordings)

“In the face of bland manufactured rappers clogging up the charts, Ghostpoet’s debut LP leaped out. Clever lyrics, wicked production and alongside ‘GOB’ by DELS, one of the few albums of 2011 that encapsulates the views of disaffected British youth in a genuine and innovative way.”

Jim’s choice: Matthew Halsall – ‘On The Go’ (Gondwana Records)

“James Blake, Anna Calvi, Little Dragon, Kate Bush… 2011 was a vintage year for albums. Matthew Halsall’s third LP on Gondwana gets my vote though. Very much in the spirit of Coltrane’s ‘Olé’ and Miles’ ‘Kind Of Blue’… tracks like ‘Song For Charlie’, ‘The End of Dukkha’ and ‘Samatha’ are timeless classics. Matthew and his band also blew me away when they played the Pizza Express in Soho back in March. A very special night.”

Karen’s choice: Mara Carlyle – ‘Floreat’ (Ancient & Modern)

“It’s so hard to pick just one album… there’s been so much amazing stuff this year. A big artist for me though is Mara Carlyle. She did an amazing session at Maida Vale for us for Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show and she’s just a super talented lady with a lovely warm sound.”
