Jamie Cullum Meets Ahmad Jamal

This week we thought we would treat you to a little preview of a special interview Jamie Cullum did recently with his favourite pianist, Ahmad Jamal! The interview will feature on Jamie’s show next Tuesday 16th April on BBC Radio 2 at 7pm.

Jamie sits down with Ahmad Jamal at the Piano at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios where they talk about his childhood growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the incredible artists that have come out of the city.

Ahmad Jamal also talks about learning the piano from an early age and even plays a childhood favourite of his, listen to the clip below to find out what it is!

They discuss how his improvisational style has evolved, his experience playing in big bands and his feelings on being sampled by hip-hop artists.

He also talks about working on his legendary Poinciana album at the Pershing Hotel nightclub.

Ahmad Jamal also talks about what it’s been like composing more new material than ever before and describes the process of making his new Grammy Award Nominated album, Blue Moon.

So tune in next Tuesday 16th April at 7pm – definitely an interview not to be missed!

tune-yards were in session this week on Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show. Influenced by afro-beat, jazz and traditional folk, the group has two saxophonists together with live voice and drum looping –  an amazing group to witness live!

Melody Gardot in session on Jamie Cullum’s show!

Melody takes influence from blues, jazz and Latin music. Today she performs tracks from her latest album, The Absence, which was released in May.

James Moody archive track on Jamie Cullum’s show!

This week on his BBC Radio 2 show, Jamie Cullum plays a gem he recently discovered in the BBC archives, featuring James Moody on the flute at London’s Poplar Town Hall back in November 1967.

James Moody performs Yesterdays in a concert that featured an all-star line-up of jazz artists including Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Clark Terry on flugelhorn and Louis Belson on drums.

This week on Jamie Cullum’s BBc Radio 2 show he has a BBC Maida Vale session with the Israeli bassist, composer and singer Avishai Cohen. Avishai’s music is heavily influenced by Middle Eastern grooves and African-American musical idioms, and he has performed and recorded with the likes of Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin.

For the session Avishai Cohen performs songs from his latest album, Seven Seas, in a trio alongside Amir Bresler and Omri Mor.

Tigran Hamasyan in session on The Selector!

This week on Jamie Cullum’s show on BBC Radio 2,  Armenian-born jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan is in session at the BBC Maida Vale Studios.

Showcasing songs from his latest album A Fable, Tigran explains how he gravitated towards jazz and traditional Armenian folk music in his childhood in Armenia, and how he returned to these early inspirations for this album.
