How Sound Affects The World!

8 Dec

Folded Wing Director Karen P wants to share an inspiring blog she came across through Angela Robson’s twitter. It’s called Sound Affects The World and is a blog for the audio charity whose aim is to link children across the world through audio. Young people share stories such as Aye Mon from Sheffield (pictured above) whose family originate from Burma. The charity have just been in Gambia so we look forward to hearing stories from there. Check out the blog here.

A cut above the rest!

Folded Wing account manager Jim Lister shares a recent inspiration:

“I watched this really inspiring BBC One ‘Imagine’ documentary on the life of Vidal Sassoon, the famous hairdresser and entrepreneur.

He’s most famous for creating the bob-cut and for turning Vidal Sassoon into one of the most successful brands in the world, but what was most inspiring about the programme was his overall positive attitude to life and how amazing he looks for 83!

His whole life story is inspiring. He came from a very poor background and grew up in a Jewish orphanage. At 17, he fought against antisemitism, breaking up Fascist meetings in East London and at 20 he joined the Israeli Defence Force and fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. And of course he later went on to revolutionise hairdessing and become one of the most successful businessmen in the world… and he seems like a very nice man with it!

He’s also been a long term advocate of keeping fit and doing Yoga and Pilates, and looks amazing for his age. You’d never guess he’s 83.

The programme is called ‘Vidal Sassoon – A Cut Above’ and is on the BBC iPlayer until 28 Dec so plenty of time to catch it.”

Heeeeeeeere’s Grace!

Folded Wing account manager Jim Lister shares a recent inspiration:

“If you missed BBC4′s ‘Word Up! Black American Pop at the BBC’ last Friday night… make sure you catch it on the iPlayer this week… ESSENTIAL VIEWING!

Amazing performance after amazing performance from Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Doug E Fresh & Slick Rick, Chaka Khan, Cameo… and my personal favourite, the queen of style and class that is Grace Jones at the peak of her powers singing the killer ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ (as performed on Wogan in 1985!).

CHECK THE OUTFIT!!! And make sure you keep watching all the way til the end…Can’t wait for the Prince doc on BBC4 this coming Friday!”

Jonathan Livingston Trafalgar Square Pigeon

22 Nov

Director of Folded Wing Karen P tells us why ‘Jonathan Livingston Trafalgar Square Pigeon’ the spoof of ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ inspires her:

“A couple of weeks ago at the Foot In The Door event at the Radio Festival I met Andrea Rangecroft who told me about this spoof version of the book about a pigeon who travels around London on the tube, It’s not quite the original but….!”

Find out more about the book here.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

3 Oct

The name Folded Wing was inspired by the story ‘Jonathan Livingstone Seagull’, an inspirational fable by Richard Bach. Seized by a passion to learn to fly faster, Jonathan Livingstone becomes frustrated with the conformity of Seagull life where doing things differently is frowned upon, and ends up outcast from his flock. Whilst in exile, Jonathan learns to fly faster all by himself by folding his wings in imitation of the falcon. Jonathan then returns to his old flock and teaches them all how to fly higher and faster.

As a great believer in the sharing and spreading of knowledge and passion, and as a keen nurturer of young talent, Karen P (Folded Wing’s Director) felt that the Folded Wing concept was too apt to ignore when naming the company.
