Monday night was an exciting night for Folded Wing and the rest of the radio industry, it was of course the 2013 Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Folded Wing were delighted to be nominated in the “Music Radio Broadcaster Of The Year” category for Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2.

Jamie and the Folded Wing team all headed down to the Grosvenor House Hotel for the awards, suitably dressed up for the night! Jamie also played at the event and caused a bit of a stir on the red carpet when he decided to turn the tables on the press!

The first half saw a performance from Robbie Williams and the first awards. Radio 1′s Dan and Phil walked away winners of this years first ever “Sony Golden Headphones Awards”. Danny Baker took an award for “Best Entertainment Programme” for his weekend show on 5 Live,  only a few months after leaving his BBC London slot! John Humphrys collected an award for Radio Journalism Of The Year for his interview with former BBC Director General, George Entwistle, John made a lovely tribute to the former DG in his acceptance speech.

The Folded Wing team were particularly happy to see The Listening Project take away a bronze award for “Best Speech Programme”, a project that we all particularly admire and love.

It was also fantastic to see Steve Lamacq walk away with his FIRST EVER Sony award. He was presented with a special award for his 20 years of service to radio, an award that is thoroughly deserved!

Following a performance from The Saturdays it was soon time for the second half of the awards featuring the category we were particularly interested in “Music Radio Broadcaster Of The Year”. Unfortunately Jamie didn’t win an award, but the whole team were delighted to see Cerys Matthews take the Gold. Cerys is an outstanding broadcaster and produces a show that we all love and listen to a lot!

Although a cliché we were incredibly happy just to be nominated in the 3rd year of doing the show with Jamie and we received some brilliant feedback from the judges…..

Jamie has become an accomplished broadcaster as well as a much loved musician. He wears his knowledge and respect lightly to deliver a show of fantastic music with energy and enthusiasm.

The second half of the awards saw Christian O’Connell win his 10th award in 10 years and Eddie Mair win “Speech Radio Broadcaster Of The Year”. Radio 4′s The Today Programme picked up “Breakfast Show Of The Year” and after a superb year with the Olympics and Paralympics, BBC Radio 5 Live won “UK Station Of The Year” .

There was also a lovely moment when Metro Radio won “Station Of The Year (1m+)”  as Programme director Chris Pegg spoke of his delight at finally winning an award after years of turning up and leaving empty handed.

It was also fantastic to see so many UK indies represented in the awards and many of them taking awards away too! And to see National Prison Radio in a couple of categorys was a great reward for the work that they do!

All in all it was a lovely night and we had a few drinks afterwards in celebration of our nomination and a wonderful evening, topped off when Jamie Cullum performed to close this years ceremony!

Following on from the launch of our latest partnership between our show The Selector for the British Council and The Crypt Studios in North London, we are pleased to announce that our second “Amped…” session has gone live!

“Amped…” is a new series of filmed live sessions at The Crypt Studios in Crouch End, North London. The sessions are recorded in partnership between The Crypt Sessions and The Selector; once a month The Selector take a band into the studio to record a short set to be played out on the show and at the same time The Crypt Sessions film one of the songs and record a short interview with The Selector presenter Goldierocks to be hosted on Thecryptsessions.com and Selector-Radio.com.

Last month we launched the first session with Camden based four piece Tribes, they performed ‘How The Other Half Live’ and had a chat with Goldierocks all about their new album and recording in Malibu.

This month’s session is with up-and-coming Leeds four piece Fun Adults, after their release of debut single “Till Sleep” and double A side single “Sap Solid / Acacia” the band have been creating a huge buzz online and made The Selector’s – Ones To Watch 2013 list. Back with a new single  “For Water” the lads popped into The Crypt Studios to perform the new track as part of our new “Amped…” series

The lads also performed a 3 track set that features in this weeks Selector radio show, they played their previous double A side singles, “Acacia” and “Sap Solid” as well as latest single “For Water”. Listen to the guys full set here:

This week’s Selector is a Northern Ireland special celebrating Belfast Music Week and featuring the country’s best new music!

Goldierocks has live session tracks from Belfast trio Dutch Schultz and an interview with Yes Cadets before they head off on their European tour. Phil Kieran is in the mix and there’s some great tracks from the likes of Little Bear, Girls Names, Fighting With Wire, Defcon and Kab Driver. There really is some good music coming out of Northern Ireland at the moment!

Plus tonight, Friday 9th November, The Selector are hosting a listening party at Ollie’s Club on Waring Street in Belfast so that fans of the show in Northern Ireland can get together and hear this week’s special. Our very own Karen P will once again be one of the industry insiders at the Foot In The Door event at this year’s Radio Festival in Salford.

The Masterclass acts just like speed-dating – ten tables packed with industry professionals sit ready to give advice on how to get your foot in the door and make a mark on the industry. Delegates get 15 minutes at each table before the klaxon sounds and they have to move on.

Karen will be on a table called ‘Who Chooses The Music?’ together with Bauer’s Trevor Jordan.

Last year’s Masterclass was the highlight of the festival for many radio hopefuls and new careers are even known to have been launched through the connections made at the event!

It all takes place at The Lowry at Salford Quays on Wednesday 14th November. Tickets are £24 (+VAT) for Radio Academy members and £48 (+VAT) for non-members.

Folded Wing’s next documentary for BBC Radio 1Xtra airs on Sunday 8^th July at 9pm.

With the Olympics drawing ever nearer in East London, Gangs On Film delves into the grimy side of the area to look at the portrayal of gangs on TV and in films.

The ‘hood’ genre has been particularly popular in productions such as ‘Top Boy’, ‘Sket’ and ‘Anuvahood’ in recent years. In this programme, Twin B explores the major themes of this genre such as drug culture, girl gangs, riots and football hooligans and asks whether these films give a realistic portrayal of gangs.

Gangs on Film is produced by Rachel Essien and features Plan B, Ashley Walters, Noel Clarke and Adam Deacon among others.

“Wednesday night I could have quite easily been on planet Jupiter, whilst actually in an airy room in Clerkenwell, due to the wonderful organisation The Arts Catalyst. The Arts Catalyst are an organisation that provide a crucial link between the often polar opposite worlds of science and art, as they commission artwork that engages with science.

Last night, the theme was Microgravity: it started with an aspirational astronaut and ended with us listening to transcendental free-jazz outer-space band leader Sun Ra. How did this happen? The Arts Catalyst actually took artists into conditions of outer space with zero gravity, and they came back to tell their experiences.

In Russia, Kitsou Dubois and Dragan Zivadinov made flying in microgravity possible for artists. If chosen, they could step upon parabolic aircrafts which go through phases of around 25 seconds where there is zero gravity. We watched a video of inside the aircraft, and it genuinely looked like a sci-fi film where people float about airlessly. Some of the artists even took carpets with them so it looked like they were riding magic carpets!

Ssome of the artists and scientists involved relayed their experiences inside the aircraft for us last night, and it was fascinating to hear what’s been going through their minds since experiencing microgravity.

Edward George and Anna Piva (Flow Motion) actually recorded the sounds inside the aircraft and played them to us – and they totally betrayed the idyllic feeling nature of the film as what it sounded like inside the aircraft was actually just intensely loud noise! Going from that to playing Sun Ra to us made complete sense, as hearing the spatial sounds of free jazz after having heard a whole night of zero-gravity tales somehow summed everything up perfectly.

Sacred Music – Sacred Spaces will mirror the wise words of John Coltrane and invites you to experience “Elation, Elegance, Exaltation”.

EUGENE MCGUINNESS – Earning a modest name for himself as a singer songwriter since 2007, the domino artist has more than paid his dues, performing as part of Miles Kane’s band and releasing three accomplished record.

THE SHUTES – The Shutes are a four-piece from the Isle of Wight who make well-crafted indie-rock with psychedelic and surf flourishes. Their recent Echo of Love EP showcases a band with songs that demonstrate confidence and maturity.
